Homework Tasks

Imagine you have just discovered a time machine.

Task 1: Your JourneyWrite about your experience using the time machine.

Include:
When would you go? (past or future)
Where would you go?
Why did you choose this time and place?
How long would you stay there?
What would you do during your visit?

Try to use a mix of:
Past or future tenses (for imagined experiences)
Conditionals (e.g. If I had a time machine, I would…)
The most important phrase for this task is: "I would" not "I will' because this is a hypothetical idea.

Task 2:
Your Decision

If you choose the past, explain why you wouldn’t want to go to the future. If you choose the future, explain why you wouldn’t want to go to the past. Or, explain why you wouldn’t use the time machine at all.

Try to include:
Modal verbs (might, could, would)
Speculation (e.g. It could be dangerous…, I might not like...)

For this task, you will write a short story or describe a real memory from your life.

From any time in your life, last week, last year, or earlier... focus on telling the story clearly and naturally.

Consider the following when setting the scene: who? what? when? where? ...

If you’re not sure what to write about, here are some options:

A funny situation while travelling (something went wrong, a misunderstanding, getting lost, etc.)
Something unexpected that happened last week
A time you felt embarrassed, stressed, or surprised
A miscommunication with someone (language, culture, or simple confusion)
A moment where things didn’t go as planned
A small but meaningful moment (a conversation, a realisation, a decision)

There's an thought I've heard once or twice, that AI will develop so much in the next 5-10 years that it will understand you, your life and be able to make better decisions for you than you would yourself. Given the choice to allow AI to dictate your life, your decisions, what would you do?

5 More Related Discussion Points to get you thinking:

  • Should we trust AI with long-term decisions such as career, relationships, or finance?
  • Is convenience worth the loss of personal autonomy when relying heavily on technology?
  • What responsibilities should humans keep, even if AI could perform them better?
  • Would society become more equal or more divided if people relied on AI to guide their lives?
  • How would your identity change if an algorithm shaped your choices and habits?

What’s the smallest thing someone could find meaning in?

Meaning could refer to joy, helpfulness, ways to stay connected or motivated, or a different interpretation of your own. I ask this question because I think it can be difficult to truly grasp what is meaningful these days. I’d be interested to hear what you think could pull us into a more meaningful direction. Whether that be through work, relationships, hobbies, or the little unnoticed moments in daily life. It could be something as ordinary as sharing a laugh, a kind word, or a quirky moment.
